Sonic's Story
Sonic is the only character you can choose from the start. When faced with the task of making this page, it seemed obvious that a level walkthrough format from the other pages wouldn't work because of the multiple cutscenes. This section will include summaries of both. If you want the full walkthrough, just read on. If you want to skip to a specific section, use the menu below. Cutscenes are in italics, levels are in yellow, bosses are in red, and other significant events are in green.

   Another heist, gassed!
On an ordinary evening in Station Square, Sonic goes for a run through town to see what's going on with the nightlife. He notices a police helicopter roaring down the street and follows out of curiosity. When he arrives at the crime scene, a strange looking creature made of liquid drops down from out of nowhere and the police begin to attack. After the creature neutralizes their bullets, Sonic gives it a go.
Boss: Chaos 0
Sonic Adventure is the only Sonic game to begin with a boss battle. Because it comes at a time when you're supposed to have no experience, it's the easiest fight in the game. Avoid Chaos' arm attacks at the beginning. He'll attack by slinging one arm at a time or by spinning to turn his arms into a buzzsaw. You can hurt him with a homing attack during any of his attacks. Three strikes and he's out.
Chaos retreats from the fight by sliding through a sewer drain. Sonic attempts to follow in persuit, but obviously he can't get very far because unlike his opponent, he can't melt himself into a puddle. As Sonic stares at the drain pondering the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, a mysterious figure watches from the roof of the skyscraper above.
The next day, Sonic seems to have gotten over the traumatic event of the previous night while napping by the pool. He's suddenly awakened by the sound of a low-flying plane. It's Tails, and he's about to crash! Oh wait, nevermind, he did crash. Time to go find the fox.
Emerald Coast was obviously designed to be a flashy show off of the Dreamcast's power. The beach resort theme works surprisingly well in a Sonic game. Watch out for the occasional breaks in the paths where you can fall into the water - Sonic doesn't swim. About a quarter of the way through the level, you'll be attacked by a killer whale as he goes postal on the resort's dock. Keep running and you'll be fine. Halfway through the level, you'll switch to a new area where you'll hop from island to island in order to reach the sandbar where Tails crashed. It runs pretty fast, the camera doesn't get too annoying, and the music is a treat to our ears after suffering through Sonic R.
After rescuing Tails, he'll tell you about his new prototype plane on the way back...and why it was unstable. Tails just happened to come across a Chaos Emerald while he was strolling around one day, so he decided to use it as the plane's power supply. He tells Sonic to meet him at the Mystic Ruins because he's just GOT to show you something. Off to the train we go...
***TAILS is unlocked as a playable character after this event.***
On his way to Tails' workshop in the Mystic Ruins, Sonic encounters Dr. Robotnik / Eggman / _________. After giving a speech about his greatness, Robotink attacks Sonic in the Egg Hornet.
The Egg Hornet is a nice leap from Chaos 0, but it's still pretty easy. Robotnik will attack either by shooting missiles or drill-diving at Sonic, so move out of the way of both. To dodge the missiles, simply keep moving as he shoots them. After he nosedives, he'll be stuck in the ground for a short period of time. In case you hadn't guessed, that's your cue to attack. Three hits will do the job.
Although Sonic won the fight, Robotnik is still victorious. He steals Tails' Chaos Emerald and feeds it to Chaos. Sonic learns that Chaos gets bigger and more destructive with each Chaos Emerald it consumes, and Robotnik wants them all. And so, the plot of Sonic Adventure is totally summed up one level into the game.
For the first time, the game doesn't tell you exactly what to do. Go up the stairs from the plateau you just fought on to reach Tails' workshop. Conveniently waiting outside is the "Wind Stone." Pick it up and carry it to the Windy Cave (use your map), where you'll see a pedestal waiting for it. Drop it in and jump in the wind.
About the same length as Emerald Coast, Windy Valley is a lot more fun. It's extremely fast and full of jumps. About a quarter of the way through the level, you'll get sucked into a tornado. Once inside, you'll need to work your way up to the top so that you can jump out with the help of a spring. Don't be afraid of the areas where the wind lifts you up - it'll always put you down in a safe place. The five minute time limit is extremely generous for emblem A, and you shouldn't have any trouble getting 50 rings to complete B.
There's nothing more to do in the Mystic Ruins for now, so head back to Station Square. Make a left going out of the train station when you arrive and follow the street into a new area that used to be blocked off by the police. You'll see an open manhole cover to the immediate left. Fall in and walk through the sewage and jump onto the balcony above. Step into the green light to receive the Light Speed Shoes. Use the new "Light Speed Dash" to get out of the sewer. If you haven't noticed, time progressed rather quickly while you were down there and it's now nighttime, so head over to the casino district. Step on the button sitting outside the casino to activate a trail of rings leading up to the roof. Use the Light Speed Dash to hit the button above the sign, which unlocks the door.
Casinopolis is probably the worst casino-themed level in Sonic's history. Now that I've made you excited about it, it's time to explain how it works. Unlike the other "Action Stages" where your primary objective is to reach the goal, this level requires you to collect a total of 400 rings and deposit them in the bank. To get those rings, you can play one of two pinball-themed minigames: a "NiGHTS into dreams" matching game, or the more traditional slot machine. You can read about those games below. If you lose all your balls (stop laughing) in either game, you'll fall into the trash as Sega's way of discouraging kids from gambling. It's really easy to get out of the trash - just go straight and let the air vents carry you upwards. Go into the bank to deposit your rings every time you get out of a minigame so that you don't accidentally lose them in the trash.
Isn't it sad that this is the closed thing we've gotten to a NiGHTS game since the original? The goal of this minigame is to shoot Sonic through the cards at the top of the table, causing them to spin and stop on a selection. Make two or more cards match, and you'll earn rings. If you can unlock the door to get past the top of the table, you'll be transported to a the nightmare table, which has no bumpers to get in your way of hitting the cards. Fall off to fly through Spring Valley from the original NiGHTS (nothing more than scenery here) and return to the original table.
Shoot Sonic straight up to the rear of the table to activate the slot machine. Press "A" to stop the slots one at a time. You can score by getting three in a row on any line: horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Three Eggman slots will take away half of your rings, so watch out.
Upon exiting Casinopolis, Robotnik appears and gasses Sonic and Tails, stealing the Chaos Emerald they just found and knocking them out in the process. When they wake up, they decide to look for more emeralds. No, really?
