Overview |
Love it or hate it, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was the original Sonic cartoon. Originally rejected by ABC, it ran weekdays on syndicated networks for 66 episodes - a length rivaled only recently by Sonic X. AoStH is often described as the "Road Runner" equivalent in Sonicdom - Sonic as the bird, Robotnik as Wile E. Coyote. Robotnik's obsession in killing Sonic is portrayed with humor unlike in the other Sonic storylines. The show itself had terrible production values in art, plot, and sound, but it managed to attract a loyal fanbase for the first year or so. It was undeniably aimed at the youngest audience of the games and therefore fell apart rather quickly when that audience moved up. Looking back, most of the original viewers have fond memories of the show. Who could forget the time Sonic told us all about rape? It is the only Sonic cartoon to have aired non-stop since its debut courtesy of Toon Disney picking up the license after USA dropped it.

Sonic Sez the Darndest Things
At the end of every episode, Sonic treated fans to the moral of the story in a segment titled "Sonic Sez." One particular episode had a rather hilarious attempt at communicating to kids. Sonic says, "Kids, there's nothing more cool than being hugged by someone you like, but if someone tries to touch you in a place that makes you feel uncomfortable, that's NO GOOD! It's your body: no one has the right to touch you if you don't want them to. So whaddya do? First, you say 'NO!' Then, ya get outta there!"
The funniest part? The show's target audience had no idea what Sonic was talking about. We've got a clip of this little public service announcement for you to hear it for yourself:

X-tremely Conspicuous Scenario
The "Sonic's Christmas Blast" special was originally advertised as "An X-tremely Sonic Christmas" in the UK's Sonic the Comic by Fleetway. We'll never know for certain, but it seems likely that the original title was intended to promote Sonic X-treme which was supposed to be released around the same time it aired. As you probably know, Sonic X-treme was cancelled and Sonic 3D Blast was released on the Saturn in its place...funny how the special's name changed to include "blast." |
