Sonic Rivals is Sonic's first appearance on a Sony handheld. Originally announced on May 3, 2006 as a part of Sega's "Road to E3" promotional event, there are less than six months between its announcement and release: the shortest for any Sonic game ever. It is also the first Sonic game to be developed by Blackbone Entertainment. But enough about that, what's the game itself?
Rivals is described by Sega as a "2D racing platformer" in the design of Sonic's early days. Basically, it's a 2D game with 3D visuals. There are four playable characters, so far confirmed as Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles. The fourth character is still unknown, but most fans speculate either Eggman or Metal Sonic. Each character has a separate storyline in the style of the Sonic Adventure series. |
