Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis |

Overview |
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is exactly what it sounds like - Sonic the Hedgehog as it appeared on the Sega Genesis. This GBA port is true to the original, but it also makes some nice additions influenced by later games, such as spindash and a save feature. It also has a new, remixed soundtrack (in addition to the original's). If you'd like to play it old-school, there's an "original" mode in addition to the new anniversary features. |

Porting Problems
Sega's decision to crop the original's resolution instead of resizing it was not the only technical problem Sonic the Hedgehog faced during its port to the GBA. Rika Chou and Tweaker of the SWS2B Message Boards dissected the official screenshots and reproduced their locations in the Genesis version to make comparisons: |
 |
The water in Green Hill Zone uses the title screen's palette as opposed to the lighter blue in the original. This causes the waterfalls to look even more jagged than before. |
 |
Sonic doesn't look any different when underwater in the Labryinth Zone. |
 |
Sonic overlaps the floor at the beginning of Spring Yard Zone. Shoddy porting at its finest. |
False Advertising
One of Sega's big selling points for Genesis was that it was "the first time Sonic's spin dash ability is available in his original adventure!" Anyone who has played Sonic Jam knows that this is not the case. |
Sonic's 15th
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis was one of four games released on November 14th, 2006 in celebration of Sonic's 15th Anniversary. The other three were Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Rivals, and the PC version of Sonic Riders. |
Budget Pricing
Unlike most GBA ports, Sonic had a budget price of $19.99 from the start. This can be attributed to its appearence late in the GBA's lifespan. |
