Overview
Sonic Mega Collection is Sonic's second major compilation on consoles. Even though the Gamecube is far more advanced than the Sega Saturn, Mega Collection is universally regarded as being inferior to Sonic Jam. The biggest problem is the lack of extra features. While Jam allowed you to save your game in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 (Genesis), Mega Collection offered scans of the Archie Comic covers. The menu system is cheaply designed, and after seeing the loading screens, which were stolen from Windows 95, it's clear that Sega was simply trying to make money off the game rather than make a quality product. Instead of porting the games like in Sonic Jam and Sonic & Knuckles Collection (PC), they're simply emulated. The full game list is as follows:

SEGA GENESIS GAMES:
Sonic the Hedgehog (1), Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
UNLOCKABLE GENESIS GAMES:
Flicky, Ristar, Blue Sphere (Sonic 3 Special Stages), Sonic 2 & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, . Comix Zone and The Ooze are also unlockable in the Japanese version.

It's worth noting that all three revisions of Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) are present in the collection. Check out out the Cheats / Secrets section to learn how to access them.

Because we have too much free time, we captured screenshots of the game's different menus. After all, they're about its only exclusive feature.

History of Sonic
Mega Collection featured a poorly made, five-and-a-half minute video on the history of Sonic, covering everything worthwhile and forgetting everything embarrassing - except Shadow the Hedgehog, that is. It featured video of Sonic the Fighters (Arcade), and since at the time we didn't have a lot of official media from the game, I guess it could be considered significant. Notice the spelling of "Robotnik" and multiple punctuation errors in the video.

Sonic CD No-Show
A large number of gaming news websites and magazines reported that Sonic CD (Sega CD) would be present in Mega Collection when it was announced. Obviously, the game wasn't in the final. What gives? Sega blamed a lack of space on the disc...which, lightly put, is bullshit. In reality, Sega had trouble writing an emulator for the Sega CD's complex architecture. They left the restored opening and closing movies in the extras section and scrapped the game out of the menu. The movies would eventually be re-used in Sonic Gems Collection (Gamecube). Thanks to screenshots captured of an early version by Sonic CuLT, we know that Sega's Vectorman (Genesis) was also originally planned to be included. They too made a return appearance in the American version of Sonic Gems Collection.

To unlock Ristar, play all the other games in the collection 20 times each.
Multiple Sonic 1 Revisions
For some very strange reason, Sega decided to include all three versions of Sonic's original Genesis outing in the collection. The default is the first Japanese revision. You have to input codes to access the others:
US Version:
The US version's biggest difference is the lack of moving clouds in Green Hill. The water in Labyrinth Zone doesn't look "wavy" and the level select screen shows the zones in incorrect order. On the game introduction screen (for Sonic 1), press "UP, Z, DOWN, Z, LEFT, Z, RIGHT, Z" and enter the game to access the US version.
JAP Revision 02:
The only difference is this version is that Sonic Team fixed the spike death bug. Unlike the other revisions, you can't be hurt while you're flashing after hitting spikes. On the game introduction screen (for Sonic 1, press "Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT" to access this revision.
Flicky Codes
Since Flicky isn't a Sonic game (and therefore not covered on Sonic World), here are its codes:
Level Select: After starting a new game, hold "UP, A, C, and START" simultaneously. Release when the "Round 1" title card appears. From here, you can select your level by pressing UP or DOWN.
Ristar Codes
Since Ristar isn't a Sonic game (and therefore not covered on Sonic World), here are its codes:
